Abscess of the pontine dorsolateral tegmentum due to E. coli and influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus co-infection

چکیده

Brain stem abscesses are rare entities that predominantly affect the pons. A wide variety of microorganisms may be implied, depending on focus dissemination. We present case a female patient with multiple comorbidities who developed multi-lobar pneumonia due to influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus during postoperative period after an emergent cholecystectomy, requiring mechanical ventilation (MV). Following clinical improvement and withdrawal MV, did not recover consciousness. Forty-eight hours later, imaging exams showed abscess in left pontine dorsolateral tegmentum –a region recently associated coma-. Despite administration broad-spectrum antibiotics, died five days later. This illustrates importance considering as cause poor neurological course critically ill patients, well need for doing rule out intracranial lesions, particularly coma-associated areas.

Evaluation of the timing of the Escherichia coli co-infection on pathogenecity of H9N2 avian influenza virus in broiler chickens

Bacterial co-infections can probably influence the pathogenicity of H9N2 low pathogenic avian influenza virus (AIV). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of exposure time to Escherichia coli (O:2) on the pathogenicity of H9N2 AIV in broiler chickens. Three hundred and sixty broiler chickens were randomly allocated to six equal groups. At the age of 26 days, all chicks except groups 5 and 6 w...

Descending projections from the dorsolateral pontine tegmentum to the paramedian reticular nucleus of the caudal medulla in the cat.

We examined whether the dorsolateral pontine cholinergic cells project to the paramedian reticular nucleus (PRN) of the caudal medulla. In 3 cats, wheat germ agglutinin-conjugated horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) was injected into the PRN and we noted cells in the dorsolateral pons that contained the HRP reaction product, cells that were immunolabeled for choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), and c...
